Author Interviews: Wynne Channing

By Kayla Curry

Wynne Channing is the author of the young adult paranormal romance What Kills Me. The novel, which is a unique take on vampires, has become a top-rated, bestselling book and in July, it won the Blogger Book Fair Reader’s Choice Award for Best Young Adult novel.

We were able to catch Wynne for a quick interview:

[FFM] Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

[WC] Of course! I’m a national newspaper journalist and young adult novelist. I teach and perform Latin dance. I love gherkins and pajamas. Not necessarily together.

[FFM] Can you share a little of your current work with us?

[WC] What Kills Me is an action-adventure story about bravery and survival. The heroine, Zee, is a young woman who finds herself at the center of an ancient prophecy. It warns that a girl will destroy the vampire race. So when Zee falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vamp, every bloodsucker in the world is out to kill her.

[FFM] Tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published.

[WC] I am my own worst enemy. It almost didn’t happen because I wasn’t sure if I could finish it and get it out there. I wanted to give up so many times or doubted that anyone would even read the book. But most great things in life require a little more courage and mental toughness than you think you have. Now one of my favourite sayings is: “Quitting would be like turning off the heat just before the water boils.”

[FFM] Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

[WC] The reader response to What Kills Me has been incredible. I had started writing a dystopian high school drama but I’ve put it aside to write the sequel to What Kills Me. I had originally plotted the story as a series and the characters deserve a second life.

[FFM] Who designed the cover of What Kills Me?

[WC] An amazing designer by the name of Liliana Sanches who is based in Portugal created the cover. All of her work is stunning. And best of all, she puts up with me. I’m a neurotic perfectionist and I’m always surprised (and grateful) that she continues to work with me on gorgeous projects.

[FFM] Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

[WC] I am a reader. I am a lover of words, of stories and escapism. I obsess over heroes. I gasp at cliffhangers and grieve over lost characters. And I want to give back. Thank you for letting me and for enjoying the ride with me.
